On November 18th, 2025, the Institute of African Studies at Yonsei University hosted the ‘Conversation with Ambassadors,’ bringing together diplomatic representatives from 13 African nations, policymakers, and industry leaders under the theme ‘AI Divide: From Technological Inequality to Shared Prosperity.’ The symposium facilitated a multi-sectoral dialogue featuring academic presentations by Professors Il Im and Sam Youl Lee on bridging the digital gap, followed by technical showcases from Hyundai Motor Company, Lunit, and Boditech Med to explore practical AI cooperation for sustainable development.

Prof. Il Im, Associate Director of the AI Future Innovation Center at Yonsei University’s Institute for AI and Social Innovation, presented the institute’s vision and major accomplishments under the theme “Future Collaboration with Africa.” He highlighted AISI’s efforts in building GPU infrastructure, developing a medical big-data platform, and operating research support programs, emphasizing the importance of global partnership. He also shared plans to expand research, education, and industry collaboration with leading African universities and companies to build a sustainable global AI ecosystem.

Prof. Sam Yeol Lee of Yonsei University's Department of Public Policy and Management discussed “Flourishing Together: AI and Education.” His presentation examined how AI is reshaping global education and widening the AI divide. Drawing on discussions from UNESCO Digital Learning Week, he outlined challenges such as rapid population growth, shortages in teachers and facilities, uneven digital access across regions and demographics, and disparities in AI literacy. He stressed that gaps in policy capacity, language diversity, and educational resources further deepen inequality, calling for comprehensive investment in teacher training, affordable high-performance devices, localized AI learning tools, and strong data governance.

Mr. Chul Park, Vice President and Head of New Business Strategy at Hyundai Motor Group, presented “Hyundai Motor Group’s Vision for a Desirable Future in Africa.” He introduced the group’s broad industrial achievements—from expressway construction to shipbuilding and large-scale land reclamation—and explained the company’s transition toward future mobility, including robotics, AAM, and autonomous robotaxis. He also outlined Hyundai’s three strategic pillars for Africa: building a green hydrogen ecosystem, expanding continent-wide infrastructure, and establishing an EV upstream supply chain, along with ongoing partnerships with SOAS, AfCFTA, and AUDA-NEPAD, and talent-development initiatives such as scholarships and internships.

Representatives from Lunit Inc., including Mr. Kihwan Kim and Ms. Soheun Lee, delivered a presentation titled “AI-Powered Cancer Care Innovation for Africa: Strengthening Healthcare Systems and Public Value through ODA Collaboration.” They introduced Lunit’s AI solutions—Lunit INSIGHT for X-ray and mammography analysis and Lunit SCOPE for pathology-based treatment prediction—which enhance accuracy and enable earlier cancer detection. They highlighted how AI can address critical healthcare gaps in Africa, particularly in early diagnosis of lung disease and breast cancer. The presentation included WHO recognition of Lunit’s AI for TB screening, successful mobile screening programs in Vietnam and Pakistan, and national adoption cases in Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Iceland, and Qatar, demonstrating the company’s vision to become the global standard in AI-driven cancer care.

Finally, Mr. Sung Dong Cho, CBSO of Boditech Med, delivered “Transforming African Health Through Diagnostic Excellence.” Boditech Med, a global IVD company with over 25 years of expertise, shared its ongoing health initiatives across 44 African countries. Using rapid and accurate POCT (Point-of-Care Testing) solutions, the company has supported cancer, anemia, TB, and maternal–child health programs through collaborations with 65 local partners. The presentation also introduced a consortium model among Africa, Yonsei University, and Boditech Med aimed at expanding technology transfer, establishing local manufacturing, creating jobs, and building a sustainable diagnostic ecosystem on the continent.

이번 심포지엄은 디지털 격차 해소를 주제로 한 임일 교수와 이삼열 교수의 학술 발표에 이어, 현대자동차, 루닛(Lunit), 바디텍메드(Boditech Med)의 기술 시연을 통해 지속 가능한 발전을 위한 실질적인 AI 협력 방안을 모색하는 다각적인 대화의 장으로 마련되었습니다.

연세대학교 인공지능사회혁신원(AISI) AI 미래혁신센터장 임일 교수는 아프리카와의 미래 협력을 주제로 AISI의 비전과 주요 성과를 소개했습니다. 특히 GPU 인프라 구축, 의료 빅데이터 플랫폼 개발, 연구지원 프로그램 운영 등 그동안 추진해온 AI 연구 기반 조성 과정을 설명하고 국제 협력의 중요성을 강조하며, 향후 아프리카 주요 대학·기업과의 연구·교육·산업 협력을 확대해 지속가능한 글로벌 AI 생태계를 구축하겠다는 계획을 공유했습니다.

연세대학교 행정학과 이삼열 교수는 "AI와 교육(Flourishing Together: AI and Education)’을 주제로, 인공지능이 전 세계 교육 환경에 미치는 영향과 그로 인해 확대되고 있는 AI 격차(AI Divide) 문제를 설명했습니다. 특히 UNESCO Digital Learning Week에서 확인된 논의들을 바탕으로, 빠른 인구 증가와 교사·시설 부족, 디지털 접근성의 지역·성별·소득별 불균형, 그리고 AI 활용 역량 격차가 교육 불평등을 심화시키는 현실을 짚었습니다. 또한 국가 간 정책 역량 차이와 언어·문화 다양성 문제가 AI 교육 격차를 더욱 확대한다는 점을 강조하며, 이를 해결하기 위해서는 교사 교육, 저비용 고성능 기기, 현지화된 AI 학습 소프트웨어, 안전한 데이터 관리 등 종합적 투자와 준비가 필요하다고 제안했습니다.

나아가 현대자동차그룹은 ‘Together for a Better Future in Africa’를 주제로, 아프리카의 지속가능한 미래를 함께 만들어가기 위한 전략적 방향을 소개했습니다. 발표에서는 자동차·철강·건설 등 65개 계열사를 기반으로 축적해온 산업 경쟁력과, 한국 산업화의 기반이 된 경부고속도로 건설, 세계 최대 울산 조선소 구축, 대규모 간척 사업 등 그룹의 역사적 성과가 강조되었습니다. 이어 미래 모빌리티 기업으로의 전환을 위해 로보틱스, AAM, 자율주행 로보택시 등 혁신 영역을 확장하고 있음을 설명했습니다. 또한 아프리카의 지속가능한 발전을 위해 ▲그린수소 생태계 구축 ▲대륙 규모의 인프라 개발 ▲전기차 공급망 조성 등 세 가지 비전을 제시하고, SOAS와의 연구센터 설립, AfCFTA·AUDA-NEPAD과의 협력, 장학·인턴십 프로그램을 통한 인재양성 등 다양한 파트너십 활동도 함께 소개했습니다.

의료 인공지능 기업 루닛은 ‘AI를 통한 암 정복’을 주제로, 자사의 의료 AI 기술이 어떻게 글로벌 암 진단·치료 혁신을 이끌고 있는지를 소개했습니다. 루닛은 가슴 X-ray·유방촬영(MMG) 기반 AI 진단 솔루션(Lunit INSIGHT)과 조직 분석 기반 치료 반응 예측 솔루션(Lunit SCOPE)을 통해 암을 더 빨리, 더 정확하게 발견하고 치료 효율을 높이는 기술을 개발해왔습니다. 특히 아프리카 지역에서 심각한 폐질환·유방암 조기 진단의 어려움과 의료 인력 부족 문제를 해결하기 위해, AI 기반 흉부 X-ray 및 유방암 스크리닝 솔루션이 조기 진단률 향상과 비용 절감에 기여할 수 있음을 강조했습니다. 또한 WHO가 루닛의 AI 솔루션을 결핵(CAD for TB Screening) 평가에서 우수 성능으로 인정한 사례, 베트남·파키스탄 등에서의 모바일 결핵 검진 활용 사례, 스웨덴·사우디·아이슬란드 등 국가적 유방암 스크리닝 프로그램에 AI를 적용한 사례를 제시하며, “글로벌 표준이 되는 AI 기반 암 진단·치료 플랫폼”이라는 비전을 공유했습니다.

25년 이상 체외진단(IVD) 분야에서 기술을 축적해 온 글로벌 의료진단 기업인 바디텍메드(Boditech Med)는, 아프리카 지역에 44개국, 65개 파트너와 함께 암·빈혈·결핵 등 주요 질환을 대상으로 한 다양한 보건사업에 참여하며 현지 의료 향상에 기여해 왔음을 밝히며, 이번 발표에서는 아프리카 보건 향상을 위한 활동을 소개했습니다. 특히 빠르고 정확한 근접검사(POCT) 솔루션을 기반으로 현재 아프리카 44개국에서 65개 파트너와 협력하며 암·빈혈·결핵·모자보건 등 다양한 공중보건 프로젝트를 수행해 왔다고 강조했습니다. 또한 장기적으로는 현지 공장 설립과 기술 이전, 인력 고용 확대를 목표로 연세대학교와 함께 ‘아프리카–연세–보디텍’ 컨소시엄 모델을 추진해 지속 가능한 의료 진단 생태계를 구축하겠다는 비전을 제시했습니다.
