  • Institute of African Studies

The Institute of African Studies is committed to enhancing Yonsei University’s international presence and to building a new relationship with Africa and the Global South based on the spirit of ‘truth and freedom’ - the core values of Christianity and Yonsei University. The region is currently emerging as a new partner for cooperation and dialogue.

Today, Africa is the world’s youngest continent, and therefore is emerging as a continent that will lead humanity in the future. According to U.N. research, one in four of the world’s population and one in three youths are expected to be African by 2050. The African economy is also on track to become the world’s third-largest economy by continent. Africa’s potential is an essential factor for sustainable development at the global level.

Yonsei University opened the Institute of African Studies in November 2023 as a way to recognize Africa’s geopolitical importance and to establish the need for active exchange and cooperation.

The Institute of African Studies aims to cultivate and support African researchers and experts through convergence research and exchanges with local governments and companies. Additionally, Yonsei University is establishing itself as a global hub for African research through multi-disciplinary research that explores topics such as African history, culture, religion, society, economy, politics, science, technology and healthcare.

Please join us in our dedication and efforts at Yonsei University and the Institute of African Studies toward defining a new, exciting, and cooperative future between Korea and Africa.

    Thank you.
