연세대학교 아프리카연구원 방사무엘연상 교수님과 정치외교학과 이인복 교수님의 지도로 운영되는 교양수업 “African Insights and Real-World Diplomacy”가 2025년 가을학기에 개설되었습니다.
본 강의는 아프리카 각국의 대사님들을 특별 연사로 초청하여, 학생들과 일반 참가자 모두가 아프리카의 현실과 외교 현장을 직접 경험할 수 있는 뜻깊은 자리를 마련하기 위해 진행되고 있습니다.

9월 18일(목)에 진행된 2주차 강의에서는 H.E. Togolani Edriss MAVURA (Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania) 대사님께서 특별 연사로 참석해주셨습니다.
마부라 대사님께서는 아프리카가 더 이상 빈곤과 분쟁의 대륙으로만 인식되는 것이 아니라, 인구 증가, 도시화, 기술 혁신, 문화산업 성장을 중심으로 한 “New Africa, New Era”가 전개되고 있음을 강조하셨습니다.

대사님은 젊은 인구 구조, 모바일•핀테크 혁신, 스타트업 성장, 자원가공 확대, 민주주의 담론 확산 등을 아프리카 발전의 주요 동인으로 제시하시며, 다양한 글로벌 행위자들이 아프리카의 전략적 중요성을 인식하고 투자와 외교적 협력을 확대하고 있다고 설명하셨습니다.
또한 2024 한-아프리카 정상회의와 140억 달러 투자 약속, EPA(경제동반자협정) 논의 등을 예로 들며, 한국의 대아프리카 접근이 점차 변화하고 있는 긍정적인 신호라고 평가하셨습니다.

향후 협력 방향으로는 한국이 아프리카를 숫자와 통계 중심이 아닌, 트렌드와 패턴 중심으로 바라볼 것을 제안하시며, 블루이코노미, 역량 강화, 핵심광물 가공, 4차 산업, 문화•콘텐츠 산업 등 분야에서 장기적이고 질적인 협력 확대의 필요성을 강조하셨습니다.

이번 강연은 학생들에게 급변하는 아프리카의 현실과 국제정세 속에서의 외교적 흐름을 생생히 이해할 수 있는 귀중한 시간이 되었으며, 한국과 아프리카 간의 미래지향적 협력 가능성에 대해 깊이 있는 성찰의 시간을 선사하였습니다.

향후 본 강의는 여러 주한 아프리카 대사 및 전직 대사님들의 초청 강연을 통해 아프리카와의 교류를 지속적으로 확대하고, 학생•교수•전문가가 함께 참여하는 지속 가능한 학문적 교류의 장을 만들어갈 예정입니다.




The liberal arts course “African Insights and Real-World Diplomacy” (YCI1903-01), directed by Professor Samuel Y. Pang (Director of the Institute of African Studies at Yonsei University) and Professor Inbok Rhee (Department of Political Science and International Studies), was newly launched in the Fall 2025 semester.
The course invites ambassadors from various African nations as guest speakers, offering both students and the public a meaningful opportunity to experience Africa’s realities and the dynamics of modern diplomacy firsthand.

On Thursday, September 18, the class welcomed H.E. Togolani Edriss MAVURA, Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania, as a distinguished guest speaker.
Ambassador Mavura emphasized that Africa is moving beyond the traditional narrative of poverty and conflict toward a “New Africa, New Era,” driven by population growth, urbanization, technological innovation, and cultural industry expansion.

He identified a young demographic structure, fintech innovation, startup growth, resource processing, and the spread of democratic discourse as key drivers of Africa’s development. He also noted that major global actors—including Russia, China, the United States, the EU, Japan, India, and Türkiye—are strengthening their engagement with Africa through summits and investments, underscoring the continent’s rising strategic importance.

Referring to Korea–Africa relations, Ambassador Mavura cited the 2024 Korea–Africa Summit, the USD 14 billion investment pledge, and ongoing EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement) discussions as positive signals of Korea’s growing attention and evolving approach toward Africa. He further suggested that Korea should view Africa not merely through numbers and statistics, but through trends and patterns, and emphasized the need for long-term, qualitative cooperation in areas such as the blue economy, capacity building, critical mineral processing, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and cultural industries.

This lecture offered students valuable insight into the emerging transformations and diplomatic realities of Africa, encouraging deeper reflection on Korea’s potential partnerships with the continent.

The course will continue to host distinguished African ambassadors and former diplomats, providing a sustainable platform for academic and cultural exchange between Yonsei University and Africa.
