연세대학교 아프리카연구원 방사무엘연상 교수님과 정치외교학과 이인복 교수님의 지도로 운영되는 교양수업 “African Insights and Real-World Diplomacy”가 2025년 가을학기에 개설되었습니다.
본 강의는 아프리카 각국의 대사님들을 특별 연사로 초청하여, 학생들과 일반 참가자 모두가 아프리카의 현실과 외교 현장을 직접 경험할 수 있는 뜻깊은 자리를 마련하고 있습니다.

10월 2일(목)에 진행된 4주차 강의에서는 H.E. Dessie Dalkie DUKAMO (Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia) 대사님께서 특별 연사로 참석해주셨습니다.
대사님께서는 ‘Ethiopia : Ancient Civilization, Pan-African Leadership, and Global Diplomacy - From the Aksumite to Modern Peace Keeping’를 주제로 강연하시며, 에티오피아가 아크숨 왕국과 랄리벨라 암굴교회로 대표되는 오랜 문명과 독자적 문자•달력 전통을 바탕으로, “인류 기원의 땅”이자 독자적인 문화 정체성을 지닌 국가임을 소개하셨습니다. 또한 ‘루시’ 화석 발견 등 고고학적 유산을 통해 에티오피아가 아프리카 문명사와 인류 역사에서 갖는 독보적 위치를 강조하셨습니다.

이어 1억 3천만 명이 넘는 젊은 인구(중위 연령 19세), 다양한 지형과 풍부한 천연자원, 유네스코 세계유산, 그리고 커피(아라비카)의 원산지로서의 위상 등 에티오피아의 인구•자원•산업 잠재력을 설명하셨습니다. 특히 에티오피아 항공이 아프리카 대륙의 항공 허브로 자리한 점을 들며, 물류와 관광산업의 성장 가능성을 강조하셨습니다.

또한 에티오피아가 아도와 전투 승리를 통해 식민지화를 피한 자주적 역사를 지닌 점, 그리고 아프리카연합(AU) 및 유엔아프리카경제위원회(UNECA) 본부가 위치한 외교 중심국으로서 범아프리카주의와 대륙 통합을 선도해 온 외교적 리더십을 소개하셨습니다.

아울러 대사님은 한국전쟁 참전을 통해 형성된 한–에티오피아 간의 역사적 유대를 언급하시며, 이를 기반으로 한 교육•연구 교류, 기술 협력, 산업 파트너십 확대의 중요성을 강조하셨습니다. 특히 AfCFTA(아프리카 대륙자유무역지대)를 활용한 무역•노동•기술 교류를 통해 양국이 공동 번영을 실현할 수 있음을 제안하셨습니다.

이번 강연은 학생들에게 에티오피아의 역사적 깊이와 현대 외교의 실제, 그리고 한국과 아프리카 간 협력의 가능성을 통합적으로 조망할 수 있는 뜻깊은 시간이 되었습니다.
향후 본 강의는 여러 주한 아프리카 대사 및 전직 대사님들의 초청 강연을 통해 아프리카와의 교류를 지속적으로 확대하고, 학생•교수•전문가가 함께 참여하는 학문적 교류의 장을 이어갈 예정입니다.




The liberal arts course “African Insights and Real-World Diplomacy” (YCI1903-01), directed by Professor Samuel Y. Pang (Director of the Institute of African Studies at Yonsei University) and Professor Inbok Rhee (Department of Political Science and International Studies), was newly offered in the Fall 2025 semester.
This course invites ambassadors from various African nations as special guest speakers, providing students and general participants alike with an invaluable opportunity to engage directly with Africa’s realities and the practice of modern diplomacy.

On Thursday, October 2, the class hosted H.E. Dessie Dalkie DUKAMO, Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, as a distinguished guest lecturer, under the topic of ‘Ethiopia : Ancient Civilization, Pan-African Leadership, and Global Diplomacy - From the Aksumite to Modern Peace Keeping’. Ambassador Dukamo introduced Ethiopia as a nation with a unique cultural identity rooted in its ancient Christian civilization represented by the Kingdom of Aksum and the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, as well as its indigenous script and calendar traditions. He emphasized that discoveries such as the fossil “Lucy” attest to Ethiopia’s role as the “cradle of humankind” and a country of immense historical and cultural depth.

He highlighted Ethiopia’s population of over 130 million with a median age of 19, its diverse geography and UNESCO World Heritage sites, and its status as the birthplace of Arabica coffee. He also noted that Ethiopian Airlines, serving as a major continental hub, plays a key role in driving the country’s economic potential in logistics and tourism.

Ambassador Dukamo further underscored Ethiopia’s diplomatic and Pan-African leadership, noting its historic victory at the Battle of Adwa, which allowed it to remain uncolonized, and its role as the diplomatic center of Africa, hosting the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

Referring to the historic ties between Korea and Ethiopia, which began with Ethiopia’s participation in the Korean War, the Ambassador emphasized the potential for joint prosperity through cooperation in education, research, industrial and technological partnerships, and the AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area) framework.

This lecture provided students with a meaningful opportunity to gain deeper insight into Ethiopia’s rich history, diplomatic leadership, and the future of Korea–Africa cooperation.
Going forward, the course will continue to host African ambassadors and former diplomats, expanding academic and cultural exchanges and fostering a sustainable platform for dialogue and collaboration among students, faculty, and experts.
