연세대학교 아프리카 연구원 방사무엘연상 교수님과 정치외교학과 이인복 교수님의 지도로 운영되는 교양수업 “African Insights and Real-World Diplomacy” 가 2025년 가을학기에 개설되었습니다.

본 강의는 아프리카 각국의 대사님들을 특별 연사로 초청하여, 학생들과 일반 참가자 모두가 아프리카의 현실과 외교 현장을 직접 경험할 수 있는 뜻깊은 자리를 마련하기 위해 진행됩니다.
9/11 (목)에 진행된 강의는 르완다 대사님(H.E. Bakuramutsa Nkubito MANZI, Ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda) 께서 The Rebirth of a Nation: Rwanda를 주제로 특별 연사로 강의에 참석해주셨습니다.

르완다 대사님께서는 1994년 집단학살 이후 르완다가 공동체 정의와 화해, 그리고 통합의 정신을 바탕으로 국가 재건에 성공한 사례를 중심으로 강연을 진행하셨습니다.
특히 가차차(Gacaca) 재판을 통한 공동체 참여형 정의 실현, 민족 구분을 행정 체계에서 제거한 포용적 정책, 그리고 능력주의와 반부패를 원칙으로 한 거버넌스 개혁 등 르완다의 사회•정치적 회복 과정을 상세히 소개하셨습니다.

또한, 드론 의료물류, 백신 제조, 디지털 행정, 친환경 관광, 광물 정련 산업 등 혁신적 발전 전략을 통해 르완다가 청렴하고 빠르게 성장하는 아프리카의 모범국가로 자리매김한 과정을 공유하셨습니다.

이번 강연은 학생들에게 아프리카의 현대사와 외교적 현실을 생생하게 이해할 수 있는 기회를 제공했으며, ‘화해를 통한 발전’이라는 보편적 가치에 대해 깊이 있는 성찰의 시간을 선사했습니다.

향후 본 강의는 여러 주한 아프리카 대사 및 전직 대사님들의 초청 강연을 통해 아프리카와의 교류를 지속적으로 확대하고, 학생•교수•전문가가 함께 참여하는 지속 가능한 학문적 교류의 장을 마련할 예정입니다.




The liberal arts course “African Insights and Real-World Diplomacy” (YCI1903-01), directed by Professor Samuel Y. Pang (Director of the Institute of African Studies at Yonsei University) and Professor Inbok Rhee (Department of Political Science and International Studies), has been newly launched for the Fall 2025 semester.

Designed to connect academic learning with real-world diplomacy, the course invites ambassadors from various African nations as guest speakers, offering Yonsei students and the public a meaningful opportunity to experience Africa’s contemporary realities and diplomatic perspectives firsthand.

On Thursday, September 11, the course hosted H.E. Bakuramutsa Nkubito MANZI, Ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda, for a special lecture titled “The Rebirth of a Nation: Rwanda.” Ambassador Manzi shared Rwanda’s remarkable journey of national reconstruction following the 1994 genocide, emphasizing the country’s path toward reconciliation, unity, and sustainable development.

He discussed Rwanda’s achievements through the Gacaca community courts, inclusive governance free from ethnic distinctions, and anti-corruption, merit-based reforms. He also introduced Rwanda’s innovative growth strategies in drone medical logistics, vaccine manufacturing, digital governance, eco-friendly tourism, and mineral refining industries, showcasing the nation’s transformation into one of Africa’s most transparent and rapidly developing countries.

The lecture offered students a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of modern African history and diplomacy, while reflecting on the universal value of “development through reconciliation.”

Going forward, the course will continue to invite distinguished African ambassadors and former diplomats, expanding academic and cultural exchanges between Yonsei University and Africa, and fostering a sustainable platform for global dialogue and learning.
